Reading For Pleasure

At the Wickersley Partnership Trust, we believe 鈥楻eading for Pleasure鈥 should be a daily entitlement for all. Through our timetabled 20-minute sessions each morning, consisting of reading of fiction texts, non-fiction texts and thematic debate, we have made clear our commitment to promote 鈥楻eading for Pleasure鈥 by placing it at the heart of our curriculum.

By promoting, inspiring and supporting our students with regards to 鈥楻eading for Pleasure,鈥 it is our intention to:
  • Develop a lifelong appreciation of reading听
  • Remove barriers to learning
  • Enable students to leave school 鈥榓ble and qualified

Central to this is the Reading for Pleasure curriculum.

All students from Y7 鈥 Y12 will follow this curriculum, outlined below:

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Year Group Novel (Teacher-led)

Thematic Reading (Non-fiction)

Independent Reading

Thematic Reading (Oracy Sesssion)

Year Group Novel (Teacher-led)

As part of this curriculum, students bring their own chosen text on Wednesdays to take part in the independent reading sessions.
Through the听Year Group Novel sessions on Mondays and听Fridays, students will experience 15 novels from the start of Y7 through to Y11, exposing them to over 800,000 words. The model will also continue into Y12.听听
Ultimately, we believe this time dedicated to reading for pleasure, reading often and reading widely will not only help our students develop their core academic skills, but it will also help empower them with a life-long appreciation and love of reading.听
